Hull York Medical School has worked in conjunction with North East Lincolnshire Care Plus Group, St Andrew’s Hospice and the North Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust to create this exciting new post combining 5 clinical sessions and 5 palliative medicine academic sessions.
Along with the HYMS Reader in Palliative Medicine and other allied academics, the post-holder will play a key role in shaping future development, and building a dynamic, internationally competitive research agenda that integrates with existing programmes. The post-holder will also play a leading role in developing a research-led learning environment for HYMS medical undergraduates in the area of palliative medicine.
The clinical commitment of the post is to provide specialist palliative medical expertise, working with the existing Specialist Palliative Care (SPC) community, hospice and hospital teams to further develop SPC Services within the North East Lincolnshire Care Plus Group community. The post holder will be supported by the Macmillan Lead Nurse, the Hospice Chief Executive, Lead GP for Palliative Care and the Specialist Palliative Care Team.
The successful applicant will have
• appropriate professional qualifications and hold or be eligible to hold specialist registration in the UK (UK CCT) in palliative medicine or be a UK Specialist Registrar within 6 months of CCST
• a higher degree (PhD*, MD*, DSc or equivalent), in an appropriate related area
• training and experience in order to be a clinical leader in palliative medicine in inpatient, hospital and community settings
• a demonstrable record of research in the field of palliative medicine
• experience in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching
*applications will be considered from those who have submitted their thesis, but outcome awaited
Salary will be on the senior clinical academic salary scale.

Providing a high level of research support within Hull York Medical School (HYMS), you will play an integral role in the success of two prominent research projects. This is an exceptional opportunity to enhance your portfolio, career and research reputation in the industry.
In a position that is jointly funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and NHS Hull, you will be involved in organising, conducting and collecting data for the individual research leader. The first of the projects, funded by NHS Hull, is to work with GP practices and clinical commissioning groups to research how strategies tackling health inequalities are being embedded into new structures in the NHS across the Humber region. In the second project, you will conduct telephone interviews with GPs from across the UK, to evaluate the use of a tool to assist referral with cancer symptoms.
To be considered for this role you will need a PhD, or have equivalent research experience, in a health or social science discipline. Experience of qualitative interviewing, data collection and analysis are essential too, as is experience in primary care and presenting your research findings.
This is a fixed term position for 21 months.
