University Libraries

Joining the university libraries
Members of HYMS are entitled to use both the University of Hull and York libraries.

  • Students receive university cards automatically for both institutions which act as library cards. Library membership of the two universities will last for the duration of the MB BS course
  • Members of staff may need to request membership of the universities from HYMS before they can apply for membership of the university libraries. To check your entitlement or request university membership contact the Dean’s PA at margaret.smith@hyms.ac.uk. Once received, library membership is renewed automatically as long as your HYMS staff status remains current.

Further details on joining the libraries and services can be found in:

Access in the Library to selected e-resources is also available to visitors at the University of York Library. Information, including a list of resources available can be found at:

University Library high demand collections:
The libraries have specific collections to deal with items in high demand. If you have a course where you expect an item to be used heavily contact library@hyms.ac.uk at least 8 weeks in advance.

SSC tutors need to request items go in high demand for the relevant university library/ies for each iteration of an SSC. SSC titles will then be placed in the high demand collection for the relevant period only:

  • HYMS Term 1 SSCs - Sep-Dec
  • HYMS Term 2 SSCs - Jan Mar
  • HYMS Term 3 SSCs - Apr-May

More information on the university library high demand collections can be found at:

University Library purchase and digitisation requests:

Purchase requests for the:

  • The HYMS undergraduate course (MB BS)
  • HYMS-based research

should be sent to library@hyms.ac.uk

Phase I SSC resources are not covered by the HYMS university libraries budget. It is the responsibility of Phase I SSC tutors to either check that relevant resources are available or to ensure that the cost of any required resource for either library is included in the SSC proposal made and purchased via SSC funds. This can be done by including book purchase costs as consumables on your SSC submission form and by sending an email to ssc@hyms.ac.uk indicating which items are to be purchased and for which University Library.

Requests for the copyright-cleared digitisation of book chapters and journal articles can also be made via library@hyms.ac.uk. To ensure items are available please request items at least 12 weeks before they are needed.

NHS Libraries

Students are asked to remember that these libraries are small and that the primary library resources during Phase I are the University Libraries.

Phase II & III HYMS students are given membership of local NHS libraries depending on placement sites. The sites include those listed above and:

Access information for e-resources

Different accounts provide access to various electronic resources subscribed to by the specific institution or organisation. These resources can include databases and electronic journals.

HYMS students are entitled to the accounts detailed below.

HYMS staff are entitled to the following accounts depending on their membership of the different organisations (please contact the Dean’s PA at margaret.smith@hyms.ac.uk if you wish to clarify this).

  • University of Hull Athens account : this is provided automatically to students and to members of staff when they join the University of Hull (see Joining the University Libraries above). See http://www.hull.ac.uk/lib/our_electronic_library/Support/athens_and_passwords.html for further details on Hull Athens and proxy server.
  • University of York Account : the University of York network account allows you to access the majority of Library e-resources. This account is provided automatically to students and to members of staff when they join the University of York (see Joining the University Libraries above). See http://www.york.ac.uk/services/library/elibrary/howtoconnect.htm for further information on the York Account and York proxy server.
  • NHS Athen account : this is provided automatically to students when they join HYMS. Members of staff can apply for this account via https://register.athensams.net/nhs/.

N.B. It is much quicker to register for an NHS Athens account from an NHS computer either on a hospital site or in a GP practice (normally passwords will be available to use within an hour). If registering from home or university registration can take up to 2 weeks.

When searching for a particular resource or subject it is advisable to access via the links provided on the HYMS Blackboard > Library tab area and/or the library webpages. My Athens can be used to check any of your Athens account details and access.
