Review
of applications for entry in 2006
There are several ‘rounds’ in the selection of successful
applicants to HYMS, which follow the procedures set out in the HYMS Code
of Practice on Admissions.
1) Meeting the academic criteria
First, all UCAS forms are checked to see whether the applicant meets the
HYMS academic criteria.
2) Being invited to interview
Secondly, all forms that meet the academic criteria are then read and
scored independently by two trained assessors; all scored forms are then
ranked in order of the mean score from the two readers, and the top scoring
500 are invited for interview.
3) Being made an offer of a place
Thirdly, each interview is scored independently by the two interviewers;
if the interviewers also recommend the applicant for an offer, the average
interview score is added to the applicant’s UCAS form score, and
the candidates are again ranked. The top scoring 300 applicants are made
an offer of a place.
Once all offers have been made we undertake a review of the characteristics
of all applicants on the basis of age, sex, geography, disability and
ethnicity. This allows us to look for evidence of bias at
each stage in the selection process, so that remedial action can be taken
if necessary.
These data are shown in the tables below.
