Review of applications for entry in 2007
There are several ‘rounds’ in the selection of successful applicants to HYMS, which follow the procedures set out in the HYMS Code of Practice on Admissions.
1) Meeting the academic criteria
First, all UCAS forms are checked to see whether the applicant meets the HYMS academic criteria.
2) Being invited to interview
Secondly, all forms that meet the academic criteria are then read and scored independently by two trained HYMS assessors against broadly defined criteria using a standard scoring form, with appropriate quality assurance. This yields an average UCAS form score for each candidate which is then added to the candidate's UKCAT score to give a ‘HYMS invitation to interview’ (HII) score. For example, in 2006, the UCAS form score accounted for 50 points and the UKCAT score for a maximum of an additional 10 points, in the generation of the invitation for interview score.
Candidates are then ranked in numerical order using ‘HYMS invitation to interview’ (HII) scores and the top 600 scoring applicants are then invited to interview.
3) Being made an offer of a place
Thirdly, each interview is scored independently by the two interviewers; if the interviewers also recommend the applicant for an offer, the average interview score is added to the applicant’s UCAS form score, and the candidates are again ranked. The top scoring 330 applicants are made an offer of a place.
Once all offers have been made we undertake a review of the characteristics of all applicants on the basis of age, sex, geography, disability and ethnicity. This allows us to look for evidence of bias at each stage in the selection process, so that remedial action can be taken if necessary.
