Campus Allocation Policy
Information for applicants
Principles
- All HYMS students are placed in either Hull or York for the first two years of the course (phase 1).
- Applicants should only accept a place at HYMS who are prepared for allocation to either university.
- Applicants cannot be allocated until after firmly accepting the offer of a HYMS place.
- Applicants are normally allocated by random ballot in order to create two balanced classes and ensure equal opportunities for clinical experience.
- HYMS reserves the right to alter applicants' campus of allocation if there is a serious imbalance of student numbers at the two sites after confirmation of A level results. This will only be done if absolutely necessary, in order to ensure there are sufficient clinical learning opportunities for all members of the year.
- In years 3, 4 and 5 all students must be prepared to undertake placements across the whole HYMS region including Hull, York, Scarborough, Scunthorpe and Grimsby.
Practice
Campus allocation will be undertaken as soon as all applicants have firmly accepted or declined their offers, usually in May. Applicants who accept HYMS as their insurance offer will not be allocated until this has become a firm acceptance, usually in late August.
Requests for allocation to a particular campus will be considered only from the following categories of applicants:
- Applicants who intend to live at home within 30 miles of the campus and travel daily to the university during term time. Additional approval by the HYMS Board of Studies is required for students to live 31 to 45 miles away, and by the University Special Cases Committee to live further than this.
Applicants may have to leave the course if they cannot meet the required standards of attendance and performance because of the demands of daily travelling or domestic commitments.
- Applicants whose resident address lies in the HYMS catchment area on their initial UCAS application. That means those whose Local Education Authority is either Humber, N Lincs, NE Lincs, York, Hull, N Yorks or East Riding). These applicants may request either to be allocated to the campus nearest their home or to be entered in to the ballot for random allocation.
- Applicants registered as current students of the University of York or the University of Hull, at the time of their UCAS application These applicants may request either to be allocated to the campus at which they are currently studying or to be entered in to the ballot for random allocation.
- Applicants with a sibling registered as a student at either the University of York or the University of Hull, in any year other than the final year. These applicants may request either to be allocated to the campus in which their sibling is registered, or not.
Applicants in any of these categories must firmly accept the offer of a place at HYMS by the end of April and then submit a written request with relevant documentation to HYMS Admissions Officer, Hull York Medical School, University of York YO10 5DD. The applicant will be informed of the outcome by June at the latest.
Allocation to a preferred campus cannot be guaranteed for applicants who only accept HYMS as their insurance offer in April.
