As a HYMS postgraduate student, you will be registered at either the University of Hull or the University of York. But you will have access to facilities and support at both our parent universities, regardless of where you are registered.
All HYMS degrees are awarded by both the University of Hull and University of York regardless of the university of registration.
You will normally be able to register at your parent university electronically or by post, but in some circumstances you might have to attend in person – for instance, if you need a visa.
The university where you're registered (either Hull or York) is called your ‘parent university’. For research programmes your parent university will be wherever your principal supervisor works. This will normally be stated on your offer letter.
For taught programmes your parent university will depend upon your course of study, as follows:
Please note that your parent university might be different from your normal place of study. For research students, your normal place of study will be whatever location is most appropriate for your research (and this might change over time). For taught students, you might be required to attend teaching sessions at either university, or at other institutions.
We will only consider a request to be allocated to a specific parent university in exceptional circumstances. If you need to make such a request, you should apply in writing to the Postgraduate Centre (firstname.lastname@example.org).
In exceptional circumstances, we might have to alter your parent university after you register. We will only do this if it is absolutely necessary.
We hold induction days for new students in March, August and October each year, where we'll give you important information about life as a postgraduate student. Soon after you start at HYMS, we'll contact you to invite you to the next induction day.
