Our Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and MSc in Health Professions Education are designed especially for health professionals who work in education. Whether you work in medicine, nursing, midwifery, radiography, physiotherapy, pharmacy, dentistry or another health profession, this course covers a variety of topics that will be of interest to you.

You will gain an expert understanding of curriculum design, delivery, assessment, feedback, leadership and research approaches to education across the health professions. This programme will enhance your professional credibility and confidence in teaching and practice.

These programmes offer flexibility from the outset: You can study at your own pace progressing from Certificate  to Diploma to Masters of Science. The course is delivered via distance learning, however optional study days are available if you would like them. We offer two entry points onto these programmes (September and January), so you can start as soon as possible.

Overview of Programme Modules

The Certificate will enable you to develop an understanding of the principle issues of learning, teaching, assessment and professional practice as they relate to clinical education. You will engage in a range of activities utilising educational theory and reflective practice.

Learning and Teaching

You will be introduced to the key principles of learning and teaching within a health profession environment. You will enhance your skills as an effective clinical teacher, equipping you with innovative teaching skills and providing you with a strong grounding in educational theory.

Assessment and Feedback

You will be provided with a good understanding of the theory underpinning effective assessment and feedback. You will consider a diverse range of assessment, the principles of providing good feedback and the contemporary theory underpinning assessment and feedback.

Professional and Reflective Practice

During this module you will develop the tools and framework to reflect critically on your practice as a health professions educator. You will reflect on professional conduct as a critical part of professional practice and familiarise yourself with behavioural measures of these subjective constructs. Learner, peer and self-evaluation feedback will be used to enhance your own teaching practice.

Overview of Programme Modules

The diploma is suitable for health professionals seeking to build on the Certificate and pursue a higher level postgraduate qualification. If you have studied for a Certificate elsewhere then you may also be able to enter at Diploma level; contact for details.

Contemporary Issues in Health Professions Education

This module will provide you with a theoretical awareness of contemporary issues, from the latest educational theory and the context of teaching through to factors influencing curriculum design and delivery.

Research Approaches in Health Professions Education

In this module you will be introduced to the philosophies, methodologies and methods common within health professions education research. You will gain an understanding of research design and be supported in the development of a research question and proposal.

Leadership in Health Professions Education

You will be empowered to explore theories and models of leadership and management in the context of health professions education. You will reflect on institutional and personal leadership approaches and explore a specific area of leadership relating to your own educational context.

Overview of Programme

The part-time MSc will involve a major research project (dissertation); you will learn knowledge and skills to deliver high quality research in health professionals education. You will be encouraged to choose a topic that is relevant to your own practice or developing interests.

Applicants must have completed a certificate and diploma to be eligible for the part-time MSc. Applicants without an existing qualification can in exceptional circumstances apply for credit for experiential learning.

Teaching and Learning Activities  

The course is taught using a mix of face-to-face study days with distance learning throughout the modules. Study days are either on campus at the University of Hull or the University of York. For students who are unable to commit to the study days, we offer an online only programme.

A range of teaching and learning activities will be used in the delivery of this programme, these include:

  • Self-directed learning
  • Small Groups
  • One-to-one mentoring 
  • Online learning e.g. discussion board and quizzes
  • Formative and Summative Feedback
  • Self-assessment activities

Entry Requirements

Part-time Certificate

Applicants to the Certificate must hold a relevant undergraduate degree or its equivalent and have access to an appropriate level of teaching activity (we recommend around 18 hours which should ideally consist of a few separate events) during the year of the programme. 

Part-time Diploma or MSc

Applicants who have completed the certificate and / or diploma may be eligible to apply for Accredited Prior Learning (APL) to allow entry onto the Diploma or MSc. In exceptional circumstances accredited prior learning may be considered for candidates with extensive educational experience but without a formal qualification. 

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate evidence of proficiency in English Language as follows: IELTS: 7.0 (in the academic test, with minimum score of 5.5 in all four language competences: Listening, reading, speaking and writing).

Applicable to contracted or seconded members of HYMS staff with substantive teaching and leadership role in the delivery of HYMS curricula (e.g. PBL tutors, Associate Directors of Clinical Studies, or Directors of Clinical Studies).

  • 20% scholarship towards tuition fees:

Applicable to employees of HYMS' NHS partner organisations including our community of honorary clinical tutors in the NHS.

The Certificate in Health Professions Education is recognised by the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery as an approved route for GPs who are interested in becoming a GP trainer. Funding is available for this programme through the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery, subject to availability.

On successful completion of the programme you will be eligible to receive internationally recognised accreditation from the Higher Education Academy. Please note that (depending on your employer) an additional fee may be payable to the Higher Education Academy if you wish to become a fellow.

Applicants who have completed the certificate and / or diploma elsewhere and wish to progress to the diploma or MSc may apply for a transfer of credit.

We take applications to these programmes throughout the year for commencing in either January or September, but early applications are encouraged.
