Jenny is Director of the Jack Birch Unit for Molecular Carcinogenesis and holds a Research Chair at the University of York, funded by York Against Cancer. Her focuses on human epithelial tissues, aiming to understand the processes that control proliferation, differentiation and cellular organisation in normal and wounded epithelial tissues and how dysregulation of these processes leads to the development and progression of malignant disease.
John's interdisciplinary research group focuses on three key aspects of solid tumour immunology:
- the development of novel prognostic/diagnostic markers and assays for solid tumours
- the development and characterisation of novel antibodies from a bacteriophage display library against tumour cells, some of which are being used as delivery vehicles of bespoke porphyrin compounds for photodynamic therapy and imaging
- the analysis of immune cell function (especially NK, LAK and T cells) and changes in circulating cytokines and neuroendocrine factors in cancer patients following surgical resection who are receiving various complementary therapeutic interventions
Professor Norman Maitland
Professor of Molecular Biology
Norman's research is focused on the development and aetiology of human prostate cancer. His overall approach is to separate the tumour (and the corresponding normal tissue) into its cellular components, and to study the role played by different cell types. Of particular interest are the roles played by epithelial stem cells and the hormone-sensitive stromal cells within the tumour and normal prostate.
Dr Rivero is a molecular cell biologist who specialises in research into the cytoskeleton, covering functional and regulatory aspects, both in mammalian cells and lower eukaryotes.
