David has overall responsibility for all educational programmes at HYMS, both undergraduate and postgraduate. His research interests encompass the learning environment, including quality assurance in education; sustainability in health care and healthcare education; and consultation skills, especially the challenge posed by language barriers and how through education we can enhance communication between patients, students and clinicians.

Dr Andy Brown
Academic Lead for the Learning Environment
Andy has developed a number of research interests in areas of curriculum development, teaching and assessment methodologies. In particular, he has led the development of a programme of education in ultrasonography for rheumatologists and an elearning programme for musculoskeletal imaging. He also continues to pursue research activities in his clinical specialty of rheumatology including disease activity and remission assessment in inflammatory arthritis and applying imaging techniques to optimise clinical evaluation and improve our understanding of the pathophysiological basis of musculoskeletal disease.

Janine has academic responsibility for all aspects of our admissions processes. She has also been closely involved in the development of the HYMS PGCME as clinical advisor to the programme. Her clinical background is in Psychiatry and she has developed a number of SSCs in this area. She has a particular interest in helping students to develop their skills in clinical diagnostic reasoning.

Jean joined HYMS in 2003 shortly before the school opened where she was responsible for overseeing development of eLearning and Personal and Professional Development in the curriculum. Currently, as Associate Dean for Assessment and Senior Lecturer in Medical Education, her primary areas of responsibility are assessment strategies, postgraduate training in teaching and learning for HYMS staff, and educational research. Jean received a University of York Vice-Chancellor's Team Teaching Award for her involvement in the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice.
Alison joined HYMS in 2010 as the Programme Director for the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. She also has responsibility for the design, development, quality assurance and marketing of all postgraduate taught programmes, developing new programmes linked to existing research and educational strengths in the school. In 2012 she was nominated for a University of York Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Award for her contribution to the PGCME, including the success of achieving accreditation of the programme by the Higher Education Academy which not only approved the PGCME for a period of 5 years, but also commended the documentation submitted, noting that it was one of the best examples of a mapping exercise that has been produced in this field.
Demian is curriculum lead for medical ethics and professionalism, and is involved in delivering plenaries, workshops and Student-Selected Components, as well as curriculum development and assessment. His research interests include philosophy of mind (especially the nature of emotion, on which he has written a number of papers) and various topics in medical ethics and professionalism, including the regulation of attitudes, apologies and conscientious objections in medical practice. Currently he is also developing an account of decisional competence, building on, but avoiding objections levelled against, the work of Allen Buchanan and Daniel Brock amongst others.
