Clinical research governance

HYMS is a partnership of several academic and NHS organisations, not a legal entity in its own right. So legal responsibility for the governance of our research rests with the HYMS partner organisations that are involved and named in research study documentation.

We have made specific arrangements so that the management and sponsorship of some studies can be shared between several organisations. This includes Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMPs).

At Hull

There is a memorandum of understanding between the University of Hull and Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust. So, for research governance purposes and to adhere to UK clinical trial regulations, most studies by University of Hull staff which involve the Trust's facilities or patients are sponsored by the Trust. This includes all CTIMPS.

This means:

  • All University of Hull staff involved in studies which are sponsored by the Trust should follow the Trust's guidance and work to its standard operating procedures. These are currently available on the Trust's website.
  • To apply for Trust sponsorship, contact the Trust's research and development department (tel 01482 461882 or email research.development@hey.nhs.uk).

At York

There is an agreement between the University of York and York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This covers research collaboration and the use of services provided by North and East Yorkshire NHS Research and Development Unit, and it relates particularly to CTIMPs. Brief details of the arrangement can be found in the North and East Yorkshire R&D Alliance newsletter for November 2010.

This means:

  • All University of York staff involved in studies which are co-sponsored by the Unit should follow the Unit's guidance and standard operating procedures. These are currently available on the Unit's website.
  • For further information, contact the Unit (tel 01904 726996 or email research.governance@york.nhs.uk).
