Diabetes and metabolic health

Our clinical research in the area of diabetes and metabolism is based at Hull Royal Infirmary, where we undertake extensive clinical trials of new treatments and foodstuffs.

Our main research thrust is in insulin resistance and the interface between polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes, and their relationship to metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk factors. Our researchers are also based at the University of Hull's biomolecular laboratories, where we focus on cardiac risk factors, hypertension, ion channels and somatostatin receptors in endocrinology and kidney disease.

We are also developing a new collaborative project to bring together researchers in the area of obesity and nutrition. Project HONEI, as it will be known, will set out to address the local and national problem of obesity and its consequences. We aim to develop innovative methods of education, prevention and treatment in our region as well as nationally and internationally by strengthening effective partnerships with pharmaceutical and food companies.
