If you are a core academic member of staff at HYMS, you can apply for funding from our Research Committee, either for pump-priming or for equipment.
Funding for pump-priming
Applications for pump-priming should not normally exceed £15,000, and you must spend any awarded funding by 31 July 2012.
We will prioritise applications as follows:
- Those which will demonstrably improve a REF submission by enabling you to submit a high-quality publication at level 3* or 4*.
This might include:
- experimental work, including staff costs
- work to complete papers
- additional analytical work
- Those which significantly increase the chances of winning external grant funding. This covers pump-priming for new research projects so that you can obtain enough preliminary data to support an application for external funding.
Funding for equipment
We will consider bids for equipment or facilities that benefit a significant proportion of HYMS staff.
In particular, this fund will consider bids for 50% match funding of equipment made on Research Council applications over the £10,000 equipment threshold.
Who can apply?
We will consider applications from any member of HYMS core academic staff. This means members of staff holding a substantive HYMS contract with the University of Hull or the University of York. If you don't hold a substantive HYMS contract with the University of York or Hull (for instance, because you are an honorary appointment, a nominative appointment or a member of staff at PGMI), you should have as a co-applicant a member of HYMS core academic staff who will make a substantive contribution to the project.
In general, we will prioritise applicants who are in the early stages of their careers, especially those who don't have strong publication profiles. But applications are welcome from more senior staff, including professors.
How to apply
Download and complete our application form (Word document).
The application form asks you to attach:
- a brief proposal (up to three sides of A4 including costings and references, no smaller than 10pt type)
- a one-page CV for each applicant
- for equipment applications: a costing including two quotes for equipment where appropriate
- for applications to complete papers: draft manuscript or figures, referee comments, or other relevant information
We strongly advise you to discuss your bid with the head of your HYMS research centre before you submit it.
Email your application to research@hyms.ac.uk by 9 January 2012.
Reviewing your application
The Research Committee will review your application on 1 February 2011. The head of your HYMS research centre will lead the discussion. If you aren't attached to a HYMS research centre, the Deputy Dean (Research) will lead discussion or nominate someone else.
If the person leading discussion deems it necessary, he or she will seek an independent review of the application (for instance, if there is insufficient expertise or a conflict of interest).
The funding decision will be made by the committee and communicated to you as soon as possible.
Reporting
If you are the principal applicant for an award, you will have to submit a report to the Deputy Dean (Research) one year after the date of the award.
Your report should be no longer than one side of A4. It should mention:
- new findings arising from the award, including publishable data
- the contribution of the award to gaining external funding
- the contribution of the award to collaborative research, if applicable
