Statistical consultancy

HYMS provides a free statistical consultancy service to NHS researchers in North and East Yorkshire and in northern Lincolnshire.

The service offers comprehensive advice on statistical matters, including:

  • designing a study
  • calculating a sample size
  • managing data
  • analysing, interpreting and presenting data
  • using statistical packages
  • publishing your results

Audit projects don't fall within our remit.

Making an appointment

We can advise you either by e-mail or at a one-to-one meeting as part of our regular clinics, which take place at NHS sites across the region. If you would like to attend a clinic, please email us in the first instance.

Only a limited number of appointments are available, and there may be a waiting list. So, if you're unable to attend your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible.

Please remember to give us adequate time to do justice to your work. If you have a deadline, please discuss this with us well in advance.

Occasionally we might also offer support in the form of collaboration or supervision, depending on your project and our availability.

What it costs

Consultations are free of charge in the first instance. However, the statistical service may be required to recover some of its costs, and you should always cost for statistical advice, data handling and analysis in any grant proposal.

If you're a research student from a different institution, your course fees should cover statistical consultancy services, so you should approach your supervisor for support in the first instance.
