Dr David Pearson

Deputy Dean (Education)

I have responsibility for all educational programmes including the MB BS, intercalated and postgraduate degrees.

Biography Research Publications

I am moving from the School of Medicine in Leeds, where I was Head of Primary Care Learning and Teaching since 2006, and Director of Intercalated Studies. Prior to that, I worked for the NHS in Bradford as Director of Medical Education (PCT) and was responsible for both undergraduate medical education and the career support scheme for salaried GPs.

My personal educational background includes a Natural Sciences Degree (Cambridge), medical studies as a graduate entrant (Edinburgh), a Masters in Primary Care (Leeds) and an Educational Doctorate (Edinburgh). Educational, academic and research interests encompass the learning environment including quality assurance in education; sustainability in health care and healthcare education; and consultation skills, especially the challenge posed by language barriers and how through education we can enhance communication between patients, students and clinicians. My overriding passions are to explore how education can help improve healthcare now and in the future across all health sectors, and how we can ensure that education can help build a truly sustainable health system in partnership with our communities.

External appointments include Sustainable Health Education Network (Co-Director); Education for Primary Care (Deputy Editor); Association for the Study of Medical Education (Policy Directory); & Royal College of General Practitioners (Board Member, Yorkshire Faculty).

Alongside my educational role, I consider myself first and foremost a clinician. I have been a general practitioner for 20 years both in inner-city Bradford and previously in Skipton. All clinicians contribute equally to making a successful health service, but there is no doubt that having an excellent primary care workforce helps achieve excellence elsewhere.
