IT and library facilities

HYMS students are jointly students of the Universities of York and Hull, and they benefit from the outstanding academic facilities available at both sites.

IT facilities

While studying at HYMS, you'll use IT skills almost every day. At the start of the course, you'll be introduced to Blackboard, our virtual learning environment, which provides computer-based support in your studies. If you firmly accept a place at HYMS, we'll send you information about how to preview Blackboard before you arrive. Then, throughout your time here, you'll use Blackboard every day to check for important announcements and to ask questions of your tutors and fellow students. It will also provide access to a wide range of important course materials, online discussions, and links to other websites which will be essential for your studies.

We have our own secure, high-speed network which delivers standard applications and a host of specialist medical software to desktop PCs. The network extends across both university campuses, and to HYMS teaching locations at NHS sites across our region, to provide seamless access to the full HYMS learning environment across our region. We also have a remote desktop facility, which makes the full HYMS desktop and medical software available from any computer on campus or within a local NHS network, providing the same experience as though you were sitting in front of a HYMS computer in one of our study rooms.

Computer connections are also available in York student study bedrooms and from University-owned houses in Hull, and state-of-the-art videoconferencing facilities link our various sites.

Library facilities

The libraries at the two Universities together have nearly two million books and over 20,000 current journal titles, as well as a wide range of DVDs, e-books, cassettes, music and multimedia CDs. Textbooks and other resources specific to the HYMS curriculum are available at both Universities.

On clinical placement, you will also have access to NHS library facilities.
