The UKCAT test

We believe that an admissions process based entirely on predicted A-level achievements doesn't necessarily serve your best interests as an applicant. So, in common with other UK universities, we ask all our applicants to take the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) in the year that they submit their application.

The test is open to everyone, regardless of A-level predictions. It helps us to improve access to our course specifically by identifying students whose predicted A-level grades are low, but who are in fact very able and may go on to achieve the results they need to enter medical school.

Key dates

The key dates for the UKCAT test in 2010 are:

  • You must register between 4 May and 27 September
  • You can take the test between 6 July and 8 October

Practice tests

From May 2010, there will be two complete free practice tests available on the UKCAT website, with both timed and untimed versions. We strongly recommend all applicants to try these -- they are by far the best way to get used to the style and timing of the real thing.

We don't endorse or recommend any commercially available preparation materials. These are not related to or licensed by UKCAT in any way.

How we use UKCAT results

If you have a total UKCAT score of less than 1900 or a verbal reasoning score of less than 420, your application won't normally be considered.

If you have a total score of 1900 or higher, and a verbal reasoning score of 420 or higher, we will award you up to 10 points based on your total score, as follows:

Total UKCAT score Points awarded
1900-2099 1
2100-2299 3
2300-2499 5
2500-2699 6
2700-2899 7
2900-3099 8
3100-3299 9
3300-3600 10
