Entry requirements

This page lists our academic entry requirements if you are applying either for entry in 2014 or deferred entry in 2015.

As well as these academic entry requirements, please consult the checklist at Am I eligible to apply? to make sure you meet all our general eligibility requirements, or your application won't be considered.

  • GCSEs

All UK applicants must have all of the following:

    • GCSE English Language at grade A.
We will accept grade B only if:
      • you have GCSE English Literature at grade A, or
      • you are a school-leaver and you have AS-level or A-level English Literature or English Language at grade B
    • We will not accept any other subject as evidence of your English language ability.

    • GCSE Maths at grade A.
We will accept grade B only if:
      • you are a school-leaver and you have AS-level or A-level Maths at grade B
We will not accept any other subject as evidence of your maths ability.

    • Six other GCSEs at grades A-C.

If you're from outside the UK, you must have the equivalent qualifications from your country. If you don't, we will consider your application based on your school or college Middle Years Programme assessments, your UKCAT score, and other factors. If you're not sure how this relates to you, please email admissions@hyms.ac.uk for advice.

Age 18 qualifications

UK and international qualifications

  • A-levels

Our typical offer is AAA at A2, achieved in a single sitting, including Biology and Chemistry. If you apply to HYMS in your A2 year, you must be predicted at least AAB for us to consider your application. For the third A2 subject, we consider all subjects of equal merit except General Studies, Applied Science, Citizenship or Critical Thinking.

You will also need a fourth subject at AS-level grade B (not General Studies, Citizenship or Critical Thinking).

We consider Maths and Further Maths as separate subjects, and accept both at either AS or A-level.

We expect A-levels to be taken over a two-year period, and we prefer all three A-levels to be taken together at the end of the two years. We won't accept an A-level taken in Year 11 or earlier.

    Other A-level elements

Undertaking the Extended Project won't be a condition of our offer, but we do recognise that it will provide you with the opportunity to develop research and academic skills that are relevant for our course.

You can also offer a single vocational A-level in Health and Social Care or IT, or a distinction in a single level 3 BTEC award or certificate, in combination with Biology and Chemistry A-levels.

If you intend to offer dual award AVCEs, you should contact admissions@hyms.ac.uk for more information.

  • Cambridge Pre-U

You must have a pass with D3/D3 in Chemistry and Biology as Principal subjects, and a D3 in your third Principal subject or Global perspectives.
  • BTEC national diploma

We don't accept BTEC national diplomas (though you can offer a distinction in a single level 3 BTEC award or certificate, in combination with Biology and Chemistry A-levels).

If you want to offer the HND in Medical Laboratory Science, contact admissions@hyms.ac.uk. We will typically ask for your final-year units to be passed predominantly with distinctions and nothing lower than merit.

  • Access courses

We will consider applicants who are taking one of the following Access to Medicine courses in one year:

    • Lancaster University: Pre-medical studies certificate of Higher Education
    • College of West Anglia, King's Lynn: Access to Medicine and Dentistry
    • Sussex Downs College, Lewes: Access to Medicine
    • Stafford College and New College, Telford: Access to Higher Education (Medicine and Health Professions)
    • University of Bradford: Foundation Course in Clinical Sciences/Medicine

If you achieve the award in or before 2014, you'll need 60 credits at level 3 Distinction level. If you achieve the award in or after 2015, when the award profile is due to change, you'll need 45 credits at level 3 Distinction level and 15 credits at level 3 Pass level.

We don't consider students who have already taken A-levels in Biology and Chemistry (but not met our grade requirements) and then take an Access course instead. We also don't consider students who have started Year 1 Clinical Sciences at Bradford.

In general, we don't consider Access to Science courses. The only circumstance where we may consider a student studying a QAA-approved Access to Science course is when we have received a specific request from an applicant and given our approval, based on full details of the course and discussion with the course providers.

  • International Foundation courses

If you are an international student, we will consider your application if you are currently taking the following course:

    • International Foundation in Medical, Biomedical and Healthcare Sciences, INTO, at St George's, University of London

You must achieve an overall score of 75%, with no less than 60% in any module.

Note that you must also meet our other academic entry requirements, including 8 GCSE grade A*-C equivalents with grade A in Maths and English.

We also have specific English language requirements.

  • Scottish Highers

Our typical offer is AAAAB at Higher level (H), including Biology and Chemistry at grade A, taken in a single attempt in Secondary Five, and either:

    • AA in Advanced level (AH) Biology and Chemistry plus an additional Higher (H) at grade A, taken in Secondary Six,

    or:

    • AA in Advanced Higher level (AH) Biology and Chemistry, plus an additional Advanced Higher (AH) at grade B, taken in Secondary Six.
  • Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma (WBQ)

Our typical offer will be conditional on achieving a grade B Pass in the WBQ Core. You will also need AA grades in GCE A-level Biology and Chemistry, and any third A-level subject at grade B (but not General Studies or Critical Thinking).

  • English Baccalaureate

The UK government intends to introduce a new English Baccalaureate for any student who secures good GCSE or iGCSE passes across a prescribed range of subjects.

We already recognise the value of a broad and balanced curriculum at GCSE, and our applicants generally achieve this without the need for a prescriptive list. So you won't gain any advantage at present from having an English Baccalaureate when you apply to HYMS, but we will keep this position under review and include it in discussions with partner schools.

  • International Baccalaureate

You must have 6,6,5 in three Higher-level subjects, including Biology and Chemistry. You must also have an overall total of 36 points for the diploma, including bonus points for Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EE).

Please note that we don't accept English Language B as proof of English language ability to GCSE grade A standard, nor do we accept Maths Studies as proof of maths ability to GCSE grade A standard. You may include these as part of your IB course, but if you do we will also ask for separate qualifications to GCSE grade A standard.

  • European Baccalaureate

You must have 85% (8.5) overall, including 85% (8.5) in both Chemistry and Biology.

Graduates and professionals

  • Graduates

We don't have a four-year graduate programme. All our applications are for the five-year programme. To apply, you must:

    • have (or be predicted) a degree class of 2:i or higher, plus already have at least grades ABB at the first sitting of your A-levels; or
    • meet our specific requirements for US or Canadian degrees (see the right-hand side of this page).

You must also have both of the following, or international equivalents:

    • GCSE English at grade A, or grade B if you scored 600 in the Verbal Reasoning subtest of UKCAT
    • GCSE Maths at grade A, or grade B if you scored 600 in the Quantitative Reasoning subtest of UKCAT

A subsequent Access Course or higher degree doesn't replace this requirement.

For both graduates and current undergraduates, your UCAS application should include a reference from your tutor commenting on your academic performance and your suitability for medicine.

We will also ask for evidence of recent knowledge of Biology and Chemistry. This can be from:

    • the Open University
    • an Access to Medicine Course
    • grade A at A-level
    • an academic biomedical science degree where you covered both Biology and Chemistry to an appropriate level in at least your first year

If you are a graduate of nursing, radiography, physiotherapy, pharmacy, or similar you will need two years' continuous post-qualification experience (at the time of application) working in that field. This is in addition to all the above requirements.

  • Open University

You must have all of the following:

    • GCSE English and Maths at grade A
    • 60 points (distinction) on the level 1 course S104 (Exploring Science)
    • a further 60 points (pass II or better), including 30 at level 2, from any of the following:
      • SK320 Infectious Disease and Public Health, level 3
      • SK277 Human Biology, level 2
      • S205 The Molecular World, level 2
      • SXR103 Practising Science (Residential), level 1
      • S151 Maths for Science, level 1
      • SK183 Understanding Human Nutrition, level 1
      • SK195 Human Genetics and Health Issues, level 1
      • other similar courses -- check with us before you commit

Points at level 1 must be at distinction level. Points at levels 2 and 3 must be at pass II or better.

  • Dentists

If you are a registered dentist and you have obtained the full MJDF RCS Eng before starting our course, we'll consider you for direct admission to year 2. This is the only circumstance under which you can enter our course at any point other than year 1.

Resits

We accept results obtained by resitting modules within the initial two year programme of post-16 education in order to achieve our typical grades.

We don't normally accept results from resits taken in a third year of post-16 education. But if there were extenuating circumstances at your first attempt (and these were communicated to staff at the responsible educational institution at the time), we will consider documentary evidence of these circumstances prior to your application, and we might then agree to accept resits on an individual basis. Please contact us directly and in good time before you apply.

We won't accept your application if you enrolled on an Access course but you already held Biology and Chemistry A-levels which are grade B or below, because we view this as a form of resit.

Current undergraduates

If you're currently enrolled on an undergraduate course at another institution, we won't accept an application from you unless your course is due to finish in the academic year when you apply.

Because of the integrated nature of our course, we're also unable to accept transfer or exchange students from other medical schools in the UK or abroad under any circumstances.

Qualifications from elsewhere

In addition to the specific requirements shown here for your country, you must have formal qualifications taken at age 16 which equate to our GCSE requirements (see above). If you don't, we will consider your application based on your school or college Middle Years Programme assessments, your UKCAT score, and other factors. If you're not sure how this relates to you, please email admissions@hyms.ac.uk for advice.
