This page lists HYMS academic entry requirements if you are applying in 2010, either for entry in 2011 or deferred entry in 2012.
You must also take the UK Clinical Aptitude Test in the year you apply to HYMS.
You must have all of the following:
- GCSE English Language at grade A.
- If you are a school-leaver and have grade B, you may contact us to provide evidence that you have subsequently used English language skills in subjects at AS, A level, or a higher qualification.
- GCSE Maths at grade A.
- If you are a school-leaver and have grade B, you may contact us to provide evidence that you have subsequently used maths skills in subjects at AS, A level, or a higher qualification.
- Six other GCSEs at grades A-C.
- A-levels: Our typical offer is AAA, including Biology, Chemistry and a third subject at A2 level. You will also need a fourth subject at AS level grade B. (For meeting these requirements, we don't accept General Studies or Critical Thinking.)
You can also offer a single vocational A-level in Health and Social Care or IT, or a distinction in a single level 3 BTEC award or certificate, in combination with Biology and Chemistry A-levels.

You must have a pass with D3/D3 in Chemistry and Biology as Principal subjects, and a D3 in your third Principal subject or Global perspectives.
We don't accept BTEC national diplomas (though you can offer a distinction in a single level 3 BTEC award or certificate, in combination with Biology and Chemistry A-levels).
If you want to offer the HND in Medical Laboratory Science, contact admissions@hyms.ac.uk. We will typically ask for your final-year units to be passed predominantly with distinctions and nothing lower than merit.
We wuill consider applicants who are taking one of the following Access to Medicine courses in one year:
- City College, Norwich
- College of West Anglia, King's Lynn
- Sussex Downs College, Lewes
- M&D Pre-Med at Sussex University
- Foundation Course in Clinical Science/Medicine, Bradford
We don't consider students who have started Year 1 Clinical Sciences at Bradford.
In general, we don't consider Access to Science courses. The only circumstance where we may consider a student studying a QAA-approved Access to Science course is when we have received a specific request from an applicant and given our approval, based on full details of the course and discussion with the course providers.

Scottish Highers
You must have both:
- AAAAB at Higher (H) level, including Biology and Chemistry both at grade A, taken in a single attempt in Secondary 5.
- AA at Advanced Higher (AH) level Biology and Chemistry and an additional Higher at grade A, taken in Secondary 6.
Our typical offer will be conditional on achieving the WBQ with 390 points, including 15 units in optional qualifications. AAA grades will be required in Biology, Chemistry and any third GCE A-Level (but not General Studies or Critical Thinking).
You must have an overall total of 36 points, with 6,6,5 in three Higher-level subjects, including Biology and Chemistry.
You must have 85% (8.5) overall, including 85% (8.5) in both Chemistry and Biology.
We don't have a four-year graduate programme. All our applications are for the five-year programme. To apply, you must have (or be predicted) either:
- a degree class of 2:i or higher, plus at least grades BBC at the first sitting of your A-levels; or
- a degree class of 2:ii, plus grades AAA at the first sitting of your A-levels; or
- minimum GPA 3.3 (if you graduated in the US or Canada).
You must also have both of the following:
- GCSE English at grade A, or grade B if you scored 580+ in the Verbal Reasoning subtest of UKCAT
- GCSE Maths at grade A, or grade B if you scored 580+ in the Quantitative Reasoning subtest of UKCAT
A subsequent Access Course or higher degree doesn't replace this requirement.
For both graduates and current undergraduates, your UCAS application should include a reference from your tutor commenting on your academic performance and your suitability for medicine.
We will also ask for evidence of recent knowledge of Biology and Chemistry. This can be from:
- the Open University
- an Access to Medicine Course
- grade A at A-level
- a biomedical science degree where you covered both Biology and Chemistry to an appropriate level in at least your first year
You must have all of the following:
- GCSE English and Maths at grade A
- 60 points on the level 1 course S104 (Exploring Science), at Pass II or better
- a further 60 points at Pass II, including 30 at level 2, from any of the following:
- SK277 Human Biology, level 2
- S320 Infectious Disease, level 3
- S204 Biology, Uniformity and Diversity, level 2
- S205 The Molecular World, level 2
- SXR270 Investigative Biology (Residential), level 2
- SXR205 Exploring the Molecular World (Residential), level 2
- SXR103 Practising Science (Residential), level 1
- S151 Maths for Science, level 1
- SK183 Understanding Human Nutrition, level 1
- SK195 Human Genetics and Health Issues, level 1
- other similar courses -- check with us before you commit
You will need at least a 2:i honours degree and five years' post-qualification experience in an area such as nursing, radiography, physiotherapy or similar. We will ask for evidence of recent knowledge of Biology and Chemistry, either via the Open University, an Access to Medicine Course, or grade A at A-level.
If you are a registered dentist and you have obtained the full MJDF RCS Eng before starting our course, we'll consider you for direct admission to year 2. This is the only circumstance under which you can enter our course at any point other than year 1.
You must have the scores given below, all of which must be achieved in a single sitting.
- Capital Territory, New South Wales: University Admissions Index of at least 98.5, including Biology and Chemistry
- Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia: Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) score of at least 98.5, including Biology and Chemistry
- Queensland: Overall Position score of 1, including Biology and Chemistry
- Victoria: Victorian Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) of at least 98.5, including Biology and Chemistry
You must meet the normal GCE A-level requirements. Our typical offer is AAA, including A in both Biology and Chemistry, and a third subject at A-level (but not General Studies or Critical Thinking).
You must have either:
- at least 85% in OSSDs from Ontario, including 90% in Biology and Chemistry and at least 85% in three other grade 12 U, U/C or M courses; or
- the equivalent grades from other provinces.
These must be achieved in a single sitting.
If you are a graduate, you should have a minimum GPA 3.3.
If you have a Senior High School Diploma, Chinese University Entrance Examination or 'Gaokao', you must supplement these with GCE A-levels in Biology and Chemistry, with grade A in each, achieved in a single sitting.
You must have an overall average of 11, including 13 in Biology and Chemistry.
You must have 15 overall, including 15 in Chemistry and Biology.
If you studied for the Option International du Baccalaureat (OIB), you must have 14 overall, including 14 in Chemistry and Biology.
You must have 1.3 or less overall, including 15 in Chemistry and Biology.
You must have a grade of 19 in your Apolytirion. This will then need to be supplemented by GCE A-levels in Biology and Chemistry, with grade A in each, achieved in a single sitting.
You must have an Advanced Level Certificate with grades AAA, including Biology and Chemistry, achieved in a single sitting.
You must have a year 12 (standard 12) average of 95% in five subjects, including at least 95% in Biology and Chemistry, achieved in a single sitting.
Alternatively, if you have any of the qualifications listed below, you must supplement these with GCE A-levels in Biology and Chemistry, with grade A in each, achieved in a single sitting:
- Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ISCE)
- All India Senior School Certificate examination (SSC)
- All India Senior Secondary School Certificate
- Higher Secondary School Certificate
- Indian School Certificate

Ireland: Irish Leaving Certificate
You must have AAAAAB at Higher level, including A1A1 in Chemistry and Biology, achieved in a single sitting.
You must have 95% overall, including 95% in both Chemistry and Biology.
Your Kenya School Certificate of Secondary Education will need to be supplemented by GCE A-levels in Biology and Chemistry, with grade A in each, achieved in a single sitting.
You must have an overall average of at least 90% (9.0), with 85% (8.5) in three state examinations including Biology and Chemistry.
You must have STPM (Malaysian Higher School Certificate) grades AAA, including Biology and Chemistry, taken in a single sitting.
You must have the Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate grades AAA, including Biology and Chemistry, taken in a single sitting.

Netherlands: Diploma Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs (VWO)
You must have an overall average of 8, including 8 in both Chemistry and Biology.
If you have a first degree, this must be in an appropriate subject at a recognised university.
If you have a West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), this must be supplemented by GCE A-levels in Biology and Chemistry, with grade A in each, achieved in a single sitting.
You must have grade 5 overall, including grade 6 in Biology and Chemistry, taken in a single sitting.
Your Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate will need to be supplemented by GCE A-levels in Biology and Chemistry, with grade A in each, achieved in a single sitting.

Poland: Swiadectwo Dojrzalosci (Matura)
You must have an overall average score of at least 80%, including at least 3 subjects to extended level. Two of these must be Biology and Chemistry, where you must have a minimum score of 80%.
You must have an overall average of 18, including 18 in Biology and Chemistry.
You must have an overall average of at least 9.
You must have more 5s than 4s, including 5s in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English.
You must meet the normal GCE A-level requirements. Our typical offer is AAA, including A in both Biology and Chemistry, and a third subject at A-level (but not General Studies or Critical Thinking).
You must have higher grades AAAAA, including Biology and Chemistry, taken in a single sitting.
You must have 9 overall, including 9.5 in Chemistry and Biology.
You must have grades AAA achieved in a single sitting.
You must have Avgangsbetyg with grades of MVG including Chemistry and Biology.
You must have SAT scores of 700 in both Verbal and Math plus four Advanced Placement (AP) test scores of 5,5,5,4 including Biology and Chemistry both at 5. These must be taken in a single sitting.
If you are a graduate, you should have a minimum GPA3.3.
We accept results obtained by resitting modules within the initial two year programme of post-16 education in order to achieve our typical grades.
We don't normally accept results from resits taken in a third year of post-16 education. But if there were extenuating circumstances at your first attempt (and these were communicated to staff at the responsible educational institution at the time), we will consider documentary evidence of these circumstances, and we might then agree to accept resits on an individual basis.
