How to apply for intercalating

The application process for an intercalated degree is different depending on whether you're a HYMS student or a student from another institution.

For HYMS students

To intercalate at HYMS, you need to complete and submit an application form before the end of term 1 in the year before you intercalate (we won't accept late forms). We will interview you at the start of term 2, and our permission will be based on the interview as well as your performance to date in the MB BS course. If you're successful, we'll then pass your application to the host department at the University of Hull or the University of York. Your offer to intercalate will be conditional on your being accepted by the host department (they might want to interview you themselves), and on you successfully completing your forthcoming Year 2 or Year 4 exams. We will review your offer to intercalate once your exam results are available.

If you want to intercalate at another institution, once you have permission from HYMS you should apply directly to that institution. It's your responsibility to find out and meet their deadlines! If the institution asks you for copies of transcripts or references, you should contact intercalatedbsc@hyms.ac.uk, giving at least at least two weeks' notice. There's no reason not to apply to more than one institution -- competition can be intense, and it's worth having a backup plan in case you don't get your first choice.

There are several opportunities for you to learn more about intercalating during your academic year. Details of these are included on Blackboard and in your course materials and timetables.

For non-HYMS students

If you're thinking about intercalating at HYMS, you should first email an expression of interest to intercalatedbsc@hyms.ac.uk. Please make sure that you include your name, email address, current location, and an indication of the project area you are interested in.

To apply for an intercalated degree in 2012-2013, you must submit:

  • an application form
  • an academic reference, confirming that you are currently in good standing with regards to your fitness to practise medicine
  • a transcript from your institution, detailing your current course's exam results to date, and explaining fully how your grades have been calculated
  • copies of your A-level certificates (minimum AAB grades required)

You must send your application form by the end of March 2012. We can't accept late application forms, though you can send your reference and transcript after this deadline if you wish.

If you're successful in your initial application, we'll invite you to interview with a representative from HYMS and a representative from the department that will be hosting your intercalated degree course.

If we make you an offer after the interview, it will be conditional on you successfully completing your forthcoming year's exams, and we will ask for a further transcript confirming these grades.

If you're not sure

If you find you're unsure whether you want to intercalate, but you think you might, you should still apply. If the deadline passes and you change your mind, we can simply cancel your application. But if you don't apply and then change your mind, it'll be too late!
