An intercalated degree is a year of absence that you can take during your medical training, so you can study for a further qualification at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
Is there a topic that you've touched on during your main medical degree, that you'd like to spend more time on? Would you like to do some research or even get published? If so, an intercalated degree is the perfect way to do this.
We warmly welcome applications from non-HYMS students onto our intercalated degree programme. You will be embedded into leading research groups, provided with expert supervisors who will guide you towards a dissertation, and offered a suite of modules to support your chosen topic.
We have options at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Remember that your chosen subject doesn't have to be the field that you want to specialise in after medical school. The very act of pursuing an intercalated degree and gaining research skills is valuable for your future career, and the topic is less important -- though it should still be one that interests you, of course!
"I came to HYMS as a medical student from another university as the first external student to study the Biology York HYMS BSc. All members of staff I dealt with were extremely welcoming and made the transition very smooth.
"The BSc offers great range and diversity in terms of the content you want to study, which was one of my reasons for selecting the course. I studied material from virology to neuroscience to cancer biology. Most of the modules, as well as going over the fundamentals, provided an overview of topical issues, important knowledge gaps and insight into how the various fields would progress in the future.
"Another advantage is that you apply to HYMS with a project in mind, so you already know who you’ll be working with and in what area before you arrive. That reduces the risk of enrolling only to find that you’re stuck in a project you didn’t really want. The project runs through almost all the academic year and this longevity allows you to really get your teeth into the material.
"My intercalated year has been excellent and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the HYMS degree to anyone wishing to intercalate!"
