If you're interested in studying for an intercalated year, you should start thinking seriously about whether intercalating will be a positive step forward for you. Different institutions have different application deadlines, and the sooner you start looking into intercalating, the better. You'll have more time to gather information, speak to the people involved and complete applications.
You should carefully read the information on this site about the types of intercalated degrees that are available at HYMS. You should also have a look at the UK-wide database of intercalated degrees, which is available at www.intercalate.co.uk. In particular, you should weigh up the benefits of researching a topic in-depth (and improving your career potential) against some possible disadvantages:
- Do you want another year of study? How will you finance it?
- Do you want to undertake research?
- How will it impact on your MB BS study?
Extra guidance for HYMS students
If you're a HYMS student, we'll provide various opportunities in the autumn term for you to meet HYMS staff, host departments at the Universities, and HYMS students who have previously intercalated:
- Early October: Year 2 students will be given a brief introduction to intercalated degrees. This usually happens at the end of a plenary.
- Mid-to-late October: Year 2 and Year 4 students will be offered a more formal discussion with Professor Paul O'Higgins and Dr Sam Cobb, who are the academic leads for intercalated degrees. This meeting will go into greater detail about what you can expect to gain from intercalating, plus issues around finance, availability and so on.
- November: The departments that contribute to the HYMS intercalated BSc will hold open days so you can meet potential supervisors, discuss possible projects, visit the facilities and generally get a feel for the department.
Keep an eye on Blackboard and your HYMS email for more information.
