Overview
The course at HYMS has several notable features that are designed to make learning relevant, supportive and fun:
- Clinical placements from the start of the course, in a wide variety of different settings
- A blended learning approach, with clinician-led problem-based learning supported by lectures,
clinical placements and student-selected components.
- Teaching in small groups, led by clinicians, throughout the course.
- Close student support from peers, problem-based learning tutors and clinical learning tutors.
- Uniquely, an equal balance of teaching across all parts of the health service. Half of our clinical learning is in primary care, fully supported and integrated with learning centres across a range of hospital sites.
- Clinical rotations across a diverse range of settings.
A fifth of your course will be chosen by you from a wide range of options, allowing you to pursue personal interests and sample a broad range of experiences -- including, if you choose, international travel.

Teaching
In the first two years of your course, you'll do much of your learning in a small problem-based learning group guided by a facilitator. In this context you can form strong relationships, adapt to working with people of different personalities and backgrounds, and learn to work as a team when tackling problems -- while also developing flexible, independent learning skills that you will use throughout your career.
Underlying all HYMS training is our belief that the medical school should bring positive change to meet the needs of our local communities, especially in areas where there is social deprivation and high levels of disease and death.
Assessment and feedback
You'll be regularly assessed, both informally and formally, throughout your time at HYMS. You will also receive regular feedback from your tutors and from each other. Assessment and feedback are key parts of the learning process -- they help you and your tutors to be clear about what you have mastered, what you have still to learn and which skills you need more practice with. Regular assessment and feedback will also help you to identify and remedy for yourself any gaps in your understanding.

The MB BS is a degree without classification. However, a category of 'with honours' is awarded to about 5% of students for exceptional performance. NB: in this context ‘with honours’ is synonymous with ‘with distinction’ and does not mean that the degree is a conventional honours degree (as in BSc (Hons), for example).
Financial
The standard fee for all UK and EU undergraduate medical students is £9000 per year, and the course is five years long.

Careers
On graduating from HYMS, your MB BS joint degree from the two universities will entitle you to register provisionally with the UK's General Medical Council. You will then enter the Foundation programme, a two-year general programme forming a bridge between medical school and specialist or general practice training.
Over the two years, Foundation trainees have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of specialties and healthcare settings before applying to enter a specialist area. There will also be openings if you want to pursue academic medicine. There are enough Foundation posts available across the HYMS area for all our graduates who wish to remain in the region.
