If you are an undergraduate HYMS student intending to present a paper or a poster at a research conference, you can apply for a HYMS bursary towards your costs.
Normally the maximum value of the bursary will be £100, although bursaries of greater than £100 may be awarded in exceptional circumstances (e.g. for travel to an international conference).
Eligibility requirements
The bursary is open to all students registered for the HYMS MB BS. This includes students who are studying for intercalated degrees, either undergraduate or postgraduate.
You should apply at least 6 weeks before the conference. We will not consider retrospective applications (made after the conference is over). Also, you can't apply more than once per academic year, or more than three times throughout the course of your studies.
Details of the award
You will be expected either to present a poster or give an oral presentation -- bursaries are not available simply for attending a conference.
You should be named in the conference programme or your abstract, where you should give your HYMS affiliation or HYMS address.
You can apply for a bursary before your abstract has been accepted, but the funds won't be released until your abstract has been accepted. If the conference is scheduled to take place during your course, you must have the appropriate permission to attend.
If we award you a bursary, we will ask you to submit a short report (up to 500 words) after the conference. We might use this for publicity purposes.
How to apply
To apply for the bursary, you should complete the application form (Word document). You should include:
- a short abstract (up to 250 words), or attach the abstract you submitted to the conference
- conference details, including the website if there is one
- approximate costs (e.g. for registration, travel, accommodation, printing)
- evidence that your supervisor has reviewed your conference submission and supports it (e.g. a letter or email)
- an indication of whether you have sought other support
Email the completed form and any attachments to research@hyms.ac.uk. We'll notify you of the result within four weeks of receiving it.
