John Busby

Chief Operating Officer

Role at Hull York Medical School

As Chief Operating Officer, John works with the Dean of Hull York Medical School and the Management Board to develop, refine and execute the school’s strategies and plans.

John came to Hull York Medical School from the Planning Office at the University of York, where he was the school’s link person on planning and budgeting. Before Planning at York, he worked across a diverse range of sectors including science outreach exhibit design, IT, consultancy, construction and research (being a chemist by background).

At Hull York Medical School, he has overall responsibility for the operational leadership of the school, overseeing the school’s infrastructure and related teams (including IT and systems, specialist facilities and estate, research support, marketing and communications, student recruitment and widening participation, and executive support functions) to ensure that the school is as efficient, effective and resilient as it can be.

John works closely with academic and clinical leaders to support the academic business of the school, while liaising with the Universities of Hull and York on financial plans and budgets, as well as with Health Education England in Yorkshire and Humber and the school’s NHS partners on funding and forward plans.
