UKCAT

The UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) is used in the selection process by a number of UK medical schools. We believe that an admissions process based entirely on predicted A level achievements doesn't necessarily serve your best interests as an applicant.

Applicants should note that:

  • All applicants are required to take the UKCAT in the year of application
  • You will need to achieve Band 1 ,2 or 3 in the Situational Judgement Test part of the UKCAT
  • Your total UKCAT score will be assigned points as part of our selection procedure, these points are determined after the UCAS deadline (as UKCAT results are published in November)

To help prepare for the test, UKCAT have produced useful resources which available on the UKCAT website.

Candidates from low-income families  may be eligible for a full bursary from UKCAT to cover the cost of the test.

Qualifications

A levels

Our typical offer is AAA at A Level obtained in your first sitting, including Biology and Chemistry (with a pass in practical experiments for reformed A levels completed in 2017 or later).

If you choose Hull York Medical School as your firm choice we will accept A*AB, or AAB/A*BB plus A in the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification).

For the third A Level subject, we consider all subjects equally, including arts or humanities subjects. We are unable to accept General Studies, Applied Science, Citizenship or Critical Thinking.

We are unable to consider Maths and Further Maths, or Biology and Human Biology, as distinct subjects for the purposes of offering three distinct A level subjects.

If you apply in your A Level year, we require predicted grades of AAA (except if you apply via one of our formal widening participation schemes, in which case you must be predicted ABB or above).

Resits

Your A level exams should normally be completed within a two-year period of study. We are unable to accept an A level taken in Year 11 or earlier. See more information about resits.

Additional qualifications

You can also offer a single vocational A level in Health and Social Care or IT, or a distinction in a single Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate, in combination with Biology and Chemistry A levels at grade A.

If you intend to offer dual award AVCEs, you should contact admissions@hyms.ac.uk

We are unable to consider students who have already taken A levels in Biology and Chemistry (but not met our grade requirements) and then take an Access course instead.

In general, we are unable to consider Access to Science courses. We may consider a QAA-approved Access to Science course, please contact the Admissions Team with your request for approval, based on full details of the course and discussion with the course providers.

Access courses are accepted as alternative qualifications for mature learners but not as a form of A-Level re-sit for recent school leavers. European Baccalaureate

You must have 85% (8.5) overall, including 85% (8.5) in both Chemistry and Biology.

Graduates

All our applications are for the five-year programme. To apply, you will need to have, or be predicted to achieve:

  • A 2.1 or above in your degree
  • 8 GCSEs A*-C/4-9, including English Language Grade B/6 and Maths Grade B/6, or equivalent
  • ABB at A Level, obtained in your first sitting. For the third A2 subjects we consider all subjects equally (we are unable to accept General Studies, Applied Science, Citizenship or Critical Thinking)
  • An overall score of 34 points in your International Baccalaureate Diploma, including 5, 5, 5, at Higher Level
  • Adequate grounding in Biology and Chemistry. This can either be from A level Biology or Chemistry at grade A, or from sufficient Biology and Chemistry content in your degree
  • Band 1 ,2 or 3 in the Situational Judgement Test part of the UKCAT

For both graduates and current undergraduates, your UCAS application should include a reference from your tutor commenting on your academic performance and your suitability for medicine.

We will also ask for evidence of recent knowledge of Biology and Chemistry. This can be from:

  • An Access to Medicine Course
  • Grade A at A level in the relevant subject(s), obtained within the last 5 years
  • An academic biomedical science degree where you covered both Biology and Chemistry to an appropriate level in at least your first year
  • Or an acceptable combination of A Level and degree content

If you are currently enrolled on a degree course and you wish to apply to enrol at Hull York Medical School before completing your current degree, you will need to meet the standard entry requirements for school leavers, for example AAA at A Level including Chemistry and Biology. Please see the section which is relevant for your pre-university qualifications for our typical entry requirements.

Gap years

We welcome applicants who have taken a gap year, because so many students find the extra experience beneficial. You can make your application to us either before your gap year (for deferred entry), or during your gap year. Either way, you must still be able to attend an interview on one of our fixed dates between December and February.

If you decide to take a gap year, please mention this in your UCAS personal statement, and include a very brief summary of what you hope to do or what you did during the year.

Transfers and re-applications

We are unable to accept transfer students from other medical schools due to the integrated nature of our course.

You must discuss your situation with us before applying if you have previously enrolled on another medical degree, either in the UK or another country, and wish to apply for first year entry.

Applications are welcomed from those who have applied previously.

Resits

If you have missed out on achieving the necessary grades at first sitting you may still be considered if you are undertaking the necessary resits. For example, we welcome applications from students who have achieved BBB (or equivalent, for example, ABC, A*BD, A*CC) at first sitting of their A Levels and who are taking one additional year to achieve AAA.

We also accept results obtained by resitting modules within your initial two-year programme of post-16 education.

Similarly, we would consider an applicant who had achieved 29 points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma, with 4, 3, 3 at Higher Level (including Biology and Chemistry), providing that the necessary resits were being undertaken in one further year to achieve 36 points overall with 6, 6, 5 at Higher Level (including Biology and Chemistry).

If you achieved lower than BBB or equivalent or 29 points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma (with 4, 3, 3 at Higher Level) at your first sitting, we will consider documentary evidence of mitigating circumstances that occurred around the time of your exams and were reported to the school or exam board at the time. This needs to be submitted to us by 1 October in the year of your application.

If you repeated a year before sitting A-Levels we will consider documentary evidence of the circumstances if submitted to us by 1st October in the year of application; we will confirm whether or not you are eligible to apply.

If you have undertaken a qualification other than A-Levels or International Baccalaureate and have narrowly missed out on the specified requirements please contact admissions@hyms.ac.uk for further information on acceptable resits.

Please note that GCSE resits will also be considered.
