Entry requirements

2020 entry requirements:
MB BS Medicine

This page lists the entry requirements which applicants need to meet to be considered for admission onto the MB BS Medicine course for 2020 entry. If you meet these criteria your application will then be ranked based upon our selection procedure.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age requirements

You must be aged 17 or over on 1 October in the year you start the course.

UCAT

The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is used in the selection process by a number of UK medical schools. We believe that an admissions process based entirely on predicted A level achievements doesn't necessarily serve your best interests as an applicant.

Applicants should note that:

  • All applicants are required to take the UCAT in the year of application
  • You will need to achieve Band 1 ,2 or 3 in the Situational Judgement Test part of the UCAT
  • Your total UCAT score will be assigned points as part of our selection procedure, these points are determined after the UCAS deadline (as UCAT results are published in November)

To help prepare for the test, UCAT have produced useful resources which are available on the UCAT website.

Candidates from low-income families may be eligible for a full bursary from UCAT to cover the cost of the test.

If you have previously enrolled on another medical degree

You must discuss your situation with us before applying if you have previously enrolled on another medical degree, either in the UK or another country.

A levels

A levels (or equivalent) should normally be completed within a two-year period of study, however, applications are welcome if you achieved at least BBB at a first sitting and are taking one additional year to achieve AAA or equivalent.

Resit applications from students who achieved below BBB at the first sitting of A-levels are not accepted.

If you repeated a year before sitting A levels we will consider documentary evidence of the circumstances if submitted to us by 1 October in the year of application; we will confirm whether or not you are eligible to apply.

English language requirements

You must have one of the following qualifications:

  • English Language: GCSE Grade B/6 or above, or AS level Grade B or above, or A-level English Language or Literature Grade B or above, or equivalent.
  • IB score of 5 (SL or HL) in English Language A or English Language-Literature A.
  • IELTS score of 7.5 with a minimum of 7.0 in every component, obtained within the last two years.
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): Total score of 73 with a minimum of 65 in every component obtained in the last two years.
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge Assessment of English): Score of 195 with a minimum of 190 in every component obtained in the last two years.
  • TOEFL: Total score of 105 with minimum 24 in writing, 26 in speaking and 22 in both listening and reading, obtained in the last two years.

At interview, if we have any concerns about your English language capability, regardless of your origin, country of upbringing or existing qualifications, we may require you to take an additional English Language test as a condition of any offer we make to you.
