Professor Alison Layton is a Consultant Dermatologist and Associate Medical Director for Research and Development, Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, Hull York Medical School.

Biography

Professor Alison Layton, M.B;Ch.B.; FRCP was appointed as Consultant Dermatologist at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust in 1994 and Honorary Professor at Hull York Medical School in 2012.

She has a particular interest in androgen mediated disorders including acne and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). She sits on the Executive Council of PCOS UK.

She has acted at Chief Investigator and Principal investigator for many clinical trials embracing acne and rosacea as well as other inflammatory dermatoses.

Professor Layton is involved in basic science research examining the immunology and microbiological aspects of acne.

She is one of the reviewers for National guidelines for rosacea and acne as well as for a number of NICE guidelines relating to dermatological conditions. She recently developed the S3 European Dermatology Forum Evidence based acne guidelines and UK British Association of Dermatology. She has written the acne chapter for the eighth edition of Rook’s Textbook of Dermatology and a recent chapter on Sebaceous Gland disorders for the Oxford Textbook of Medicine. Professor Layton has reviewed and developed Cochrane reviews relating to acne and is regularly invited to peer review original research papers for journals.

She has been invited to lecture and chair sessions at many international symposiums on subjects related to acne and rosacea and has written many chapters and review articles specifically relating to these conditions.

Professor Layton was appointed to the position of Clinical Director for the North East Yorkshire Comprehensive Research Network in 2010 and is Associate Medical Director for research for her trust.
