My clinical work is hospital -based. I teach palliative and end of life care & deliver communication masterclasses to HYMS students.

Ward round teaching - I teach about the complexity of patient care and professional practice whilst modeling professionalism, enhance clinical reasoning and teach about the importance of communication skills.

I am an examiner for Hull York Medical School OSLER assessments.

Biography

Elaine Boland has been a consultant in Palliative Medicine in Hull University Teaching NHS Hospitals since August 2012 where she is the clinical and multidisciplinary team lead. She qualified in medicine from the University of Malta in 2002, and did her general medical training and MRCP there before coming to the UK in 2006. She worked in oncology and then as a registrar in palliative medicine in Sheffield. For her PhD, she studied the brain processing of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in patients with multiple myeloma as well as assessing their quality of life and symptom burden. She continues to work developing the services for patients with non-malignant diseases in Hull and East Riding. She is the deputy associate editor for Supportive care in cancer journal (palliative care section) and an invited member for the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer guidelines committee. She is an honorary senior lecturer for Hull York Medical School. She collaborates on research projects and has published in peer-review journals. She lectures at local and national conferences, and teaches students, nurses and all grades of doctors.
