Role at Hull York Medical School

I am a Doctoral Research Fellow working with the TRANSFORM Group as part of a £4.9million Yorkshire Cancer Research grant. I am employing my skills as a software engineer, researcher and clinician to develop and validate an NHS mHeath service to enable comprehensive geriatric assessment of older patients with head and neck cancer.

Prior to this, he read a BSc in Biomedical Science at The University of Sheffield achieving First Class Honours, graduating top of his cohort and being awarded the Society of Biology Top Bioscience Student Award 2009.

In 2014, he was awarded MBChB with Honours, graduating in the top 1% of the cohort and amassed numerous academic awards: the pre-clinical medicine prize, Leith-Neuman prize in pathological studies, Frank Ker Prizes for outstanding performance in the fieId of infectious disease (clinical medicine and clinical sciences), the Arthur Thompson Travel Scholarship, Owen Wade prize for medical education and Distinctions in pre-clinical medicine and clinical sciences.

Research

His past research interests include the endothelin axis and molecular pathology of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Research during his Academic Foundation Programme identified COSMIC mutations in nine previously unassociated genes in the sinonasal inverted papilloma-squamous cell carcinoma spectrum.

He has held an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in Otolaryngology within the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery. Gordon studied Graves' disease immunobiology using microfluidic technology with the academic team attached to Hull York Medical School and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Gordon recently secured a full-funded, Yorkshire Cancer Research Doctoral Research Fellowship and is currently exploring the utility of mHealth on improving the assessment of older patients with head and neck cancer.

Early esteem indicators include £8,000 worth of grant awards.

Teaching

Medical education is important to Gordon, having lectured nationally and founding and creating the DO-HNS VLE (dohnsvle.co.uk).
