Nicola Howard

BSc CQSW AFHEA Dip

Open Door Practitioner

Role at Hull York Medical School

This is a new role and represents an expansion of HYMS student support provision. I will undertake mental health interventions with students as well as support staff with their dealings with students in difficulty. My role will extend beyond the well-defined clinical role, in training academic and PSS staff on general student engagement, supporting induction sessions, planning proactive measures and by reducing the perceived barriers of students approaching the Open Door Team.

Biography

Most recently I have worked at the University of York as a Lecturer on the Think Ahead (MA) Mental Health Social Work programme, teaching mental health interventions to social work students and newly qualified social workers, as well as having a student support role through tutorials. I am a qualified social worker with a background in Adult and Child Mental Health, Children Looked After and Safeguarding, working primarily in local authority settings in London, Newcastle, York and Leeds and also within Hospital settings.
