Pedro has enjoyed external research funding as lead investigator from a variety of bodies, including since 2020: the British Heart Foundation, NERC, Yorkshire Brain Tumour Charity, Hull and East Riding Cardiac Trust Fund, Blackpool Health Determinants Research Collaboration, and the private sector. He has editorial responsibilities in Perspectives in Public Health and Amino Acids, and is a member of the Independent Scientific Review Panel, Breast Cancer UK, an IPCC Expert Reviewer and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health.
After his integrated MSc Chemical Engineering (environmental specialism), Pedro did his PhD at the University of Bristol (2004-2007) funded by a Marie Curie grant from the EU. After a short stage in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL, Heidelberg, 2007-2009), he joined the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the University of Girona (2009), where he gained a Sara Borrell Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Spanish Government (2011-2014). Pedro then joined the University of Hull in 2015 as a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences, becoming a Senior Lecturer in the Hull York Medical School in 2022.
Pedro's research lines include:
1) laboratory research towards a) investigating environmental adaptations and responses of organisms to climate pressures, and b) cardiovascular research, focusing on protein post-translational modifications; and 2) climate and health research from a systems perspective.
Pedro is the co-Director of our MSc Health and Climate Change, where we explore the links between human health and climate change, the biggest health threat facing humanity (WHO 2021). He also contributes to teaching in BSc Biomedical Science and a number of MSc programmes e.g. MSc Environmental Change, Management and Monitoring.
