Role at Hull York Medical School

As clinical dean, Dr Jayagopal facilitates collaboration between the core academic team and the NHS delivery team at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is responsible for overseeing delivery of Hull York Medical School's clinical programmes, leading on-site clinical teaching, ensuring effective use of educational resources and supporting quality assurance.

Biography

Dr Jayagopal completed his medical training in 1995 and specialist training in diabetes and endocrinology in 2005. In the same year he was awarded MD with honours from the University of Hull for his research into the biological variation of insulin resistance in diabetes and PCOS. He joined York Hospital as a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology in August 2005 and has been clinical lead for the service from 2009 to 2017, when he stepped down to take up his appointment with HYMS.

His clinical work includes all aspects of diabetes and endocrinology, with special interest in community diabetes, insulin pumps, diabetes related renal disease and osteoporosis. In the last few years he has been involved in the transformation of diabetes services in the York area with the creation of a 3 tier care model and the Community Diabetes Service.

Vijay is the regional advisor for diabetes to the Royal College of Physicians. Nationally, he has worked with Diabetes UK following his appointment in 2015 as a local clinical champion, and participates as a mentor for the Consultant Diabetologist Mentorship Scheme. Vijay has recently been elected to the national committee of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists.
