Exceptional circumstances

Sometimes things happen that affect your studies, your performance in an exam or prevent you undertaking the exam at the scheduled time. If these events are unforeseeable and exceptional, please do let us know so we can consider your circumstances in your application to us.

If you are planning to apply to study with us

If you are planning to apply to the MB BS Medicine or MB BS Medicine with a Gateway Year and have experienced issues of a personal, social or domestic nature that have affected your studies, or your ability to meet our published entry requirements, we encourage you to let us know by completing our exceptional circumstances form.

We are only able to override parts of our selection policy in exceptional circumstances. Our resit policy is designed to allow a single resit of A Levels which should cover the majority of people who have dropped grades due to exceptional circumstances. We do not accept resit applications if you achieved less than BBB at the first sitting.

All medical requests must be evidenced by brief confirmatory written evidence, preferably from an involved professional. You will be asked to upload this in the form.

We do not normally require detailed medical histories or copies of hospital letters. If we require further information, we will let you know.

Please note that these should be circumstances that haven't already been mitigated by an examination board, or taken into account prior to awarding marks for formal assessments, such as coursework.

We will consider the following on a case by case basis:

Exceptional circumstances
Circumstance Possible concession
I have achieved fewer than the 8 GCSEs A*/9 – C/4. If the circumstances are approved, we will upscale the score for the GCSEs you have achieved.
I have achieved a score of 5 in GCSE English Language, but have a high score in English Literature. If the circumstances are approved, we may take an average across the two scores into consideration.
It has taken me longer than three years to complete my A Levels. If the circumstances are approved, we may allow your application to pass this element of our screening process, to be considered as part of our selection for interview ranking.
I do not have the correct A Level or Degree grades, but I have completed relevant postgraduate study and / or very relevant work experience. If the circumstances are approved, we may allow your application to pass this element of our screening process, to be considered as part of our selection for interview ranking.
I was unwell on the day of my UCAT test, and this was not taken into account at the time. If the circumstances are approved, we may take this into account if you are ranked on the borderline in our selection for interview ranking.
I was certified as eligible for extra time after sitting my UCAT, so did not take the UCATSEN. If the circumstances are approved, we may take this into account if you are ranked on the borderline in our selection for interview ranking.

We will not consider the following circumstances:

We will not consider the following circumstances
Circumstance  Reason
I have achieved 5 or lower in my GCSE Maths. We are happy to accept resits for GCSEs, so would expect you to resit your Maths GCSE to achieve a B/6.
I am currently resitting A Levels or equivalent, but achieved lower than BBB in my first attempt. We will not consider applicants who have a grade lower than B (or equivalent) in any of their Level 3 qualifications. You can apply to us once you have met our entry criteria, or look at alternative entry routes.
I did not sit my UCAT test this summer. We use the UCAT as part of our application process and cannot consider applications without a UCAT result.
