Getting ready to arrive

You may be both excited and perhaps a little nervous about starting medical school, but remember, we are here to support you.

We have put together this handy guide to help you get ready to arrive.

Things to do first

As soon as your place is confirmed and your status on UCAS Track is 'unconditional firm', there are some things you will need to do, including enrolment, setting up your ICT accounts, confirming your accommodation and your student finances. Don't worry, we'll be in touch with all you need to know.

Our student induction makes sure that you get the best start possible. We'll send more information about your induction and welcome activities to your personal email address a week before the start of the term.

What happens at induction?

Induction is designed to help you feel prepared and confident as you begin your journey as a medical student with us. You’ll have the chance to meet your classmates, find out more about your timetable and teaching sessions, learn how to get the most from your sessions, and discover the support available to you throughout your studies.

We will email you a full schedule of induction activities one week before induction begins, so you’ll know what to expect and can plan ahead.

As a student at Hull York Medical School, you will be warmly welcomed into our community by our two MedSocs – our vibrant, student-run medicine societies based at Hull and York. You will meet MedSoc during your induction.

Hull and York MedSoc each host a range of events throughout the year, including film nights, themed parties, charity fundraisers, talks from guest speakers, and the flagship Summer and Winter Balls.

Medic Parent scheme

MedSoc is also on hand to offer support if you need advice on your studies or university life, and its Medic Parent scheme – where first year students are paired up with a mentor in the year above – ensures that every medical student has someone looking out for them.

Register with a GP

It is important that all students are registered with a local GP when they start at medical school. This is so that you can get timely advice and support in the event that you are unwell. This is particularly important for any students with long term health conditions that require regular review.

If you have a disability or health condition

If you have an existing disability or health condition, please let us know as soon as possible, as there is a lot of support available to you. The earlier you make us aware, the sooner we can arrange for appropriate support. Please get in touch with studentwellbeing@hyms.ac.uk.

If you have a health condition that needs specialist review, you should discuss with your specialist how best to ensure that you can get the support and advice you need while at medical school. If your home address is some distance from the medical school, you may need to arrange appointments during the holidays or be referred to a local specialist near Hull or York.

Hull York Medical School Bursary

If you're a UK student joining our MBBS Medicine or Medicine with a Gateway Year programme and your residual household income is £35,000 or less, you may qualify for the Hull York Medical School Bursary - a bursary of £1,000 per year.

Your university automatically awards the Bursary to eligible students who have ticked the box giving permission to share relevant information with their university in their Student Finance application.

If you are eligible for the bursary and have not given permission, we encourage you to contact Student Finance as soon as possible.

There may be times when you need additional support to help you manage academic or personal pressures, and we are here to help.

We offer a range of support to ensure you get the most out of your time at medical school and are supported throughout your journey to becoming a doctor.
