The Skin Research Centre is a pivotal component within the Experimental Medicine and Biomedicine research group, whose roots trace back to the very foundation of Hull York Medical School. Leveraging the group’s profound emphasis and expertise in immunology and infection research, we are driving transformative advancements in global health.

Our research with the NHS and industry is driving improvements in skin sampling techniques, diagnosis, and treatment of skin cancer and various skin conditions.

We offer extensive and comprehensive coverage across the entire spectrum of skin research. Our membership to the York Biomedical Research Institute brings additional access to expertise and technology to the Skin Research Centre.

From scientific discovery to applied research, clinical research, and pilot production and manufacturing, we are dedicated to making a lasting impact on skin health. 

Skin, being the largest organ in the body, plays an essential role in protecting us from infection and injury.

Skin conditions impose a significant cost on the NHS, costing £723 million annually, and more than 3 million primary care hours.

Many patients also highlight the psychosocial impact of these conditions as significantly affecting their wellbeing.

Despite the evident need for skin research, there is a significant knowledge gap both nationally and globally.

At our Skin Research Centre, we bridge the divide between scientific discoveries and practical applications to bring tangible improvements to the lives of individuals with skin conditions.

We foster collaboration with the NHS, national, and international industries to conduct ground-breaking research and develop innovations in diagnosis and treatments.
